- Labor Day was first observed on September 5th, 1882 by the Central Labor Union of New York
- It became a federal holiday in 1894 under the Grover Cleveland administration
- The holiday is meant to recognize the country’s workers
- Some say it became a federal holiday after a particularly violent confrontation between the U.S. military and labor unions
- It’s considered to be the symbolic end of summer
- It’s typically the beginning of the school year
- It’s the beginning of football season!
