In honor of Labor Day, we’re going to shelve the talk about generators, central air units, the perfect plunger, furnace filters, air duct cleanings, and garbage disposals.

Now, now, now, don’t worry, next week we’ll ramp right back up with your favorites: the DIY home improvement projects, the energy saving tips, and water heater maintenance information. We promise.

But today, let’s look at some interesting tidbits regarding this weekend’s holiday: Labor Day.

  • Labor Day was first observed on September 5th, 1882 by the Central Labor Union of New York
  • It became a federal holiday in 1894 under the Grover Cleveland administration
  • The holiday is meant to recognize the country’s workers
  • Some say it became a federal holiday after a particularly violent confrontation between the U.S. military and labor unions
  • It’s considered to be the symbolic end of summer
  • It’s typically the beginning of the school year
  • It’s the beginning of football season!
